“Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.”
---John F. Kennedy
Welcome to one of the finest stadiums in the United States, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. We are pleased to announce the newest football classic, the Patriot Classic, which will match up some of the most notable high school teams in the region on September 9th and 10th in beautiful Annapolis, MD on the Chesapeake Bay. This event is unique in numerous ways. As this year marks the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, active and retired members of the military will be acknowledged and thanked for their service to our country. We also will be honoring members of the civilian workforce who serve the greater good in their roles as first responders, educators, volunteers and elected officials who, along with many others, contribute to the progress and safety of our communities and the country. We are extremely excited that the city of Annapolis will be hosting our visiting teams during the Patriot Classic. This city is rich in historical sites and the area boasts a multitude of places for families to enjoy and create maritime memories.
All Americans undoubtedly remember where they were when they heard the news regarding the events of September 11, 2001. The participating student-athletes were 4-8 years old when the tragedy occurred, but they have grown up witnessing the impact of the events that occurred that fateful day. Aside from enjoying American football, we are encouraging students and their families to recognize and honor those who serve the United States in various capacities, while being cognizant of their own service to our country through continuing their education and building strong individual character.
The idea of the classic began five years ago. There were no commemorative events in high school athletics, which acknowledged the immense role that the Armed Forces play in our lives. Due their dedication in serving our country, we have the freedom to play and enjoy this game. Even though the current student-athletes may be too young to vividly recall the events that took place ten years ago, we want them to understand and acknowledge the impact that the events had on our country, as well as, to show respect for the sacrifices made by our soldiers. Their selflessness allows us to continue playing and cheering for America’s greatest game in its purest form, high school football. We look forward to seeing you on September 9th and 10th at the Naval Academy.
